Social media use in all age groups has risen exponentially over the past five years.
When students were asked why they use social media websites and apps, they responded:
"They let me talk to my friends," "I can keep up with other people, and let them know what I'm up to," and "It's fun to share pictures of your life with other people."
However, the images that are presented on these sites are fake; people post photos and status updates that reflect them positively, and inadvertently cultivate a fake online persona. Additionally, interactions on social media websites are often superficial and are not equivalent to socializing in real life, despite the illusion of connecting with others.
